Jean Arthur first caught the attention of 1920s audiences in silent shorts and Westerns, but when talking pictures arrived, her biggest asset catapulted her to the top of the comedy genre. Her unmistakable voice became the cornerstone of her on-screen stardom as seen (and heard) in these three screwball, belly-laughers that will surely bring you to tears. Includes If You Could Only Cook (Herbert Marshall, Leo Carillo. 1935/72 min), in which an auto executive, while brooding over a fiancée who doesn’t love him and a board of directors who reject his ideas, is convinced by an unemployed cook to accept a position with her working for an ex-bootlegger as a cook-butler duo. Next up is the hilarious The Whole Town’s Talking (Edward G. Robinson. 1935/93 min) in which Robinson plays a double role as a regular guy who is a carbon copy for a ruthless gangster. The meek Arthur Ferguson Jones gets arrested by the cops who mistake him to be the famous gangster Killer Manion. The doppelganger is then set free with a special pass to keep it from happening again. But chaos ensues when the real gangster finds about the pass and tries to steal it. Jean Arthur is unforgettable as the girlfriend. Finally, in Too Many Husbands (Fred MacMurray, Melvyn Douglas. 1940/81 min), Vicky Lowndes marries her first husband’s friend Henry, one year after hubby Bill was declared dead from drowning. Suddenly when Bill returns to show he’s very much alive, Vicky has one husband too many and while both men compete for her attention, she’s taking her time to decide. B&w/NR/fullscreen.
