If only one writer had to be picked to represent the 19th Century, it would have to be Charles Dickens. Much of the reason for this would have to do with his fascination with it's figures across the social spectrum, his indignation at it's hypocrisy and exploitation, and his warmth towards the humble and the compassionate of his time.
