Set against the backdrop of California's impending statehood in the mid-19th century, this western drama stars Barbara Stanwyck as Lily Bishop, who runs afoul of wagon train guide Jonathan Trumbo (Ray Milland) on the way out west. They wind up in a small mining town where Lily throws in with ruthless former slave trader Pharaoh Coffin (George Coulouris).
