Sean Connery

From Bodybuilding to Bond and Beyond, Sean Connery's Still Going Strong

Before Arnold Schwarzenegger became the most musclebound man in movies, that title belonged to Sean Connery. The sexy Scot hit the weights after a stint in the Navy, making a run at Scotland's "Mr. Universe" title in his early twenties. His buff physique also landed him several modeling jobs, which eventually led to an acting career that's lasted nearly the entire second half of the 20th century. He's been in a lot of films during that time, many of which you can add to your collection at Critics' Choice Video.

Connery's first role of note was Lana Turner's lover in 1958's "Another Time Another Place". He was in the film for all of 15 minutes before being killed off, but with the arrival of the '60s came larger roles in the British gangster film "The Frightened City" and as James Bond in "Dr. No". His suave personification of Ian Fleming's character made Connery an international star, but despite fine performances in Alfred Hitchcock's "Marnie" in 1964 and in the comedy "A Fine Madness" in 1966, he couldn't shake the Bond persona. He abandoned the series after "Diamonds Are Forever", starring in such memorable films as "Murder On the Orient Express", "The Man Who Would Be King" and the WWII epic "A Bridge Too Far" during the '70s. He opened the '80s by reprising the Bond character in "Never Say Never Again", but by the end of the decade, 007 had finally become a distant memory after an Oscar-winning turn alongside Kevin Costner in "The Untouchables" and a wonderful performance as Indiana Jones' father in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade". Connery's work in the '90s has included a cameo in Costner's "Robin Hood Prince of Theives" (Connery played the kind-hearted thief 15 years earlier in "Robin and Marian") and numerous action roles, including "The Hunt For Red October", "The Rock" (with Nicolas Cage and 1999's, "Entrapment"

Along with Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery is Hollywood's preeminent elder statesman. Judging by his body of work available from Critics' Choice Video, he's not getting older--he's getting better.
