Jack Lemmon
Grumpy old man? Hardly. Jack Lemmon is known as one of Hollywood's warmest denizens--and finest actors.
Born in 1925 as John Uhler Lemmon III in Boston, Jack Lemmon went to Harvard after serving in the Navy. Excelling in drama, he moved to New York, where he earned money as a piano accompanist for silent films. Summer stock and TV work led to his 1954 film debut, "It Should Happen To You"; one year later he won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in "Mister Roberts."
Lemmon's career has featured key partnerships with Billy Wilder (as in 1959's "Some Like It Hot" and 1960's "The Apartment" ) and Walter Matthau (as in 1968's "The Odd Couple" and 1993's "Grumpy Old Men"). Equally adept at drama and comedy, Lemmon earned an Oscar for 1973's "Save The Tiger" and nominations for 1979's "The China Syndrome" , 1980's "Tribute" and 1982's "Missing". He also won the A.F.I.'s Life Achievement Award in 1988. Whether he's sharing the screen with major stars like Henry Fonda and James Cagney (as he did in "Mister Roberts") or Al Pacino and Kevin Spacey (as in 1992's "Glengarry Glen Ross" ), Jack Lemmon has always been able to steal the scene with his honest, deeply affecting style. Critics' Choice Video has his most acclaimed performances, many on DVD! Though in later years, at a time when older actors were appearing in movies for nostalgia value, Lemmon still proved to be an actor�s actor, taking roles that challenged him as an actor, yet still wining acclaim. Roles like juror #8 in the update of "12 Angry Men" and starring opposite George C. Scott in the retelling of "Inherit The Wind." Sadly, however, Jack Lemmon passed away in late June of 2001 and though he will be missed, he leaves behind a body of work that is almost impossible compete with. He may not have been a sex symbol, but when it came to personality, Jack Lemmon had charm to spare. |
