Legendary B-western and serial director (and Quentin Tarantino favorite) William Witney helmed this smart, tense actioner, filmed on location in the Grand Canyon State. War hero-turned-movie star Audie Murphy (To Hell And Back) stars as a former Quantrell’s Raider who, along with pal Ben Cooper (Johnny Guitar), are sprung from a chain gang by ranger Buster Crabbe (Flash Gordon) on condition they agree to be deputized so they can round up the remaining members of the gang — which they hope to accomplish by pretending to rejoin! The fine cast also includes Michael Dante and Gloria Talbott, and it’s beautifully shot in Technicolor and Techniscope by Jacques Marquette (A Bucket Of Blood).
