For anyone who says the Civil War wasn't about freeing the slaves, they should ask the brave men of the 54th Massachusetts. It was the first formal Army regiment of black soldiers. From free northern African-Americans to runaway slaves, this unit trained and fought fiercely in an effort to gain the freedom of all African-Americans.
